No-Prep Veneers Cost: Lumineers, Vivaneers, DURAthin + Generic Options

No-prep veneers (also called ultra-thin or contact-lens veneers) are designed to bond to teeth with minimal or no enamel removal. Several branded and generic options exist, ranging from $800-$2,500 per tooth. Lumineers is the dominant brand but not the only option.

The Prep Spectrum

Tooth preparation for veneers exists on a spectrum, not as a binary choice:

Traditional prep

0.5-0.7mm removal

Standard porcelain veneers. Allows full colour masking, optimal gumline contour, ideal for darker underlying teeth.

Minimal prep

0.2-0.3mm removal

Standard with most no-prep brands in cases requiring any prep. Better aesthetics than true no-prep in cases with darker underlying shade.

No prep (true)

0mm removal

Only possible with 0.2mm shells on teeth with appropriate dimensions. Achieved in approximately 65% of no-prep veneer cases.

Why Most Cosmetic Dentists Prefer Minimal-Prep

True no-prep veneers are aesthetically limited in some cases. A 0.2mm shell bonded without any prep sits proud of the natural tooth surface. If existing teeth are large or bulky, this creates a visible ledge at the gumline and makes the treated teeth look disproportionately large.

Minimal prep (0.2-0.3mm) allows the veneer to sit flush with the gumline, creates space for masking darker underlying shades, and generally produces more natural-looking results. Most AACD-accredited cosmetic dentists recommend minimal prep over true no-prep for the majority of cases, reserving true no-prep for specific anatomical scenarios.

Is No-Prep Right for Your Case?

No-prep may be appropriate if: your existing teeth are small or worn (the 0.2mm addition will not look bulky), your underlying tooth shade is light (B1 or lighter on the Vita scale), your teeth are reasonably well aligned (significant malposition cannot be hidden under a 0.2mm shell), and you are willing to accept the gumline aesthetic tradeoff in cases where some bulkiness is unavoidable.

The best way to assess suitability is a wax-up or digital mock-up. A competent cosmetic dentist will simulate the result and show you specifically whether no-prep produces acceptable aesthetics for your case before any bonding begins.
